       O filme é sobre um rapaz jovem que vive de trapaças e tem a oportunidade de ir a uma festa de pessoas muito ricas com o casaco emprestado de uma faculdade famosa e cara . Ele vai como pianista de uma cantora lírica. Coincidentemente  ou não , o filho do dono da casa tb estudou nessa universidade e tb fez música.  Essa torna-se a chance de Tom Ripley cair nas graças do pai de Dickie e ser contratado por um bom dinheiro para ir ter com este e convencê-lo a voltar pra casa . O pai comenta com ele que Dickie gosta de Jazz e ele , então que nunca se interessou por esse tipo de música começa a estudar e leva alguns álbuns famosos de jazz para se encontrar com Dickie. Tem de agradá-lo a todo custo. 

    E assim inicia-se o relacionamento de Tom com Dickie e a namorada de Dickie , Marge.  Tom então, passa a levar a vida de prazer e luxo que sempre sonhou. Festas , música, e acaba por convencer a Dickie de seu verdadeiro interesse por Jazz, até indo morar  na casa dele. Dickie é um playboy que tb sai com outras garotas . Se envolve com uma italiana moradora do local e a engravida. Tom percebe esse envolvimento. Essa moça aparece morta no mar num dia festivo para a cidade. Tom conversa com Dickie mostrando-se muito amigo e confidente com o amigo que se sente culpado acreditando que ela suicidou-se por ele não ter dado dinheiro para o aborto. Esse comportamento porém , tão solícito e exageradamente amistoso acaba por trazer desconfianças em Dickie que decide que é  melhor Tom ir embora pois é encostado e abusador. Diz que decidiu se casar e que é melhor ele ir embora. Mas a música os une é Dickie lhe faz um último  convite  para ir a San Remo , onde pretende morar e conhecer o clima de música da cidade.  

       Dickie é um rapaz muito autêntico , simpático, comunicativo, popular e um tanto irritável. Estava na Itália pois havia se envolvido em uma briga anteriormente. Era , mimado. Tom o admirava, e em sua ausência o imitava e usava suas roupas . 

       Em San Remo ,num passeio de lancha , Dickie já irritado com o oportunismo de Tom, começa a colocar medo nele dirigindo intempestuosamente. Dickie o acusa de mentir , de querer ser seu amigo com artifícios mentirosos para se aproveitar de seu modo de vida o que enfurece a Tom que acaba por o estrangular e joga-lo ao mar. 

       Tom passa a ser Dickie já que imitar é sua especialidade até mesmo a assinatura. E , a partir daí, toda vez que está prestes a ser desmascarado ele volta a matar quem o atrapalha no caminho da vida sonhada de luxo e prazer. 

       E , assim ele segue sempre escondendo sua identidade, não só a externa mas também e principalmente a interior. Aquilo que realmente é.  Ele engana a todos com um jeito manso ou a quase todos. Não percebem a violência que traz dentro de si suscitada pela inveja e ganância que o permite matar sem nenhum remorso. A única que o conhece é  Marge, namorada de Dickie, descobre que ele se faz passar por Dickie e começa a ver em Tom a maldade , a perversidade do ódio e a inveja. Ela vislumbra porão de horrores que ele tem dentro de si. Ela sabe que ele matou seu namorado.

    Ripley é inteligente , não porque aprendeu  a esconder seu modo  de ser , pois isso todo psicopata percebe sua diferença e acaba por aprender a se esconder, desde a infância. Mas porque demonstra  tristeza em seu rosto. Sabe que nunca poderá dar a “chave de seu porão a ninguém”. A chave de seu coração , nunca poderá amar , se doar a ninguem.  . Quando está enforcando seu namorado ele pede pra que este fale de suas qualidades .  Peter fala de como  vê  a Tom. E Tom o acusa de ser bom mentiroso. Assim como ele mesmo é . Pois Tom não é nada do que ele diz , meigo, afetuoso, etc , a mentira do amante acaba por  irrita-lo. Peter mente pra si mesmo pois não pode ver que a pessoa que pensa que ama é um desconhecido. E ninguém pode amar um desconhecido.  O vazio dentro de Ripley é a consciência, pois é um homem inteligente, e sabe que nunca poderá amar realmente. Ele mente pra todos mas não pra si mesmo. Daí seu rosto sempre sério que só sorri pra agradar e convencer. Nunca de alegria. A única alegria autêntica pra ele,  é tocar

    The movie is about a young boy who lives by cheating and has the opportunity to go to a party of very rich people with a borrowed jacket from a famous and expensive college. He goes as the pianist of a lyric singer. Coincidentally or not, the son of the owner of the house also studied at this university and also studied music.  This becomes Tom Ripley's chance to win over Dickie's father and be hired for good money to go to Dickie and convince him to come home. His father tells him that Dickie likes jazz and so he, who has never been interested in this kind of music, starts studying and takes some famous jazz albums to meet Dickie. He has to please him at all costs. 

    And so began Tom's relationship with Dickie and Dickie's girlfriend, Marge.  Tom then goes on to lead the life of pleasure and luxury that he has always dreamed of. Parties, music, and he ends up convincing Dickie of his true interest in jazz, even moving in with him. Dickie is a playboy who also goes out with other girls. He gets involved with an Italian girl who lives there and gets her pregnant. Tom notices. The girl turns up dead in the sea on a festive day for the town. Tom talks to Dickie, proving to be very friendly and confiding in his friend, who feels guilty believing that she killed herself because he didn't give her money for the abortion. However, such a helpful and overly friendly demeanor ends up making Dickie suspicious and he decides that it's best for Tom to leave because he's a pushover and an abuser. He says he's decided to get married and he'd better go. But music brings them together and Dickie gives him one last invitation to San Remo, where he wants to live and get to know the city's music scene.  

       Dickie is a very authentic, friendly, communicative, popular and somewhat irritable boy. He was in Italy because he had been involved in a fight earlier. He was spoiled. Tom admired him, and in his absence imitated him and wore his clothes. 

       In San Remo, on a speedboat trip, Dickie, already irritated by Tom's opportunism, began to frighten him by driving recklessly. Dickie accuses him of lying, of wanting to be his friend by using lying tricks to take advantage of his way of life, which infuriates Tom, who ends up strangling him and throwing him overboard. 

       Tom becomes Dickie, since imitation is his specialty, even down to his signature. And from then on, every time he's about to be unmasked, he goes back to killing anyone who gets in the way of his dream life of luxury and pleasure. 

       And so he continues to hide his identity, not just the external one, but also and especially the inner one. What he really is.  He deceives everyone with his gentle manner, or almost everyone. They don't realize the violence he carries inside him, brought on by envy and greed, which allows him to kill without any remorse. The only one who knows him is Marge, Dickie's girlfriend, who discovers that he is impersonating Dickie and begins to see in Tom the evil, the perversity of hatred and envy. She glimpses the basement of horrors he has inside him. She knows that he killed her boyfriend.

    Ripley is intelligent, not because she has learned to hide her way of being, because every psychopath realizes their difference and learns to hide from childhood. But because she shows sadness on her face. He knows that he will never be able to give anyone the "key to his cellar". The key to her heart, she will never be able to love or give herself to anyone. When he's hanging his boyfriend, he asks him to talk about his qualities.  Peter talks about how he sees Tom. And Tom accuses him of being a good liar. Just as he himself is. Because Tom is nothing like what he says, gentle, affectionate, etc., his lover's lie ends up irritating him. Peter lies to himself because he can't see that the person he thinks he loves is a stranger. And no one can love a stranger.  The emptiness inside Ripley is his conscience, because he is an intelligent man, and he knows that he can never really love. He lies to everyone, but not to himself. Hence his always serious face that only smiles to please and convince. Never with joy. The only real joy for him is playing the piano.
