The movie is based on the book of the same name by John Grisham.
It begins with two boys, the oldest of 11 years old, witnessing a suicide attempt. Mark, the oldest of the brothers, tries to prevent suicide and is assaulted by the suicide who tells him to be a lawyer for mobsters, persecuted by them because he knows the place where the body of a senator, murdered, is buried.
Mark now knows the secret because the suicide, moved by an act of revenge, not only reveals the place to him, but also gives him the name of the instigator of the murder and his own nickname. And this name is the sign that Mark reveals, without knowing it, to the policeman who discovers his fingerprints inside the suicide car.
From there, Mark is investigated and pressured by justice to say what he knows.
As he is a boy who had to mature very early because, with a father, alcoholic, abusive who beat his mother and as an older son, he felt having to protect his mother and brother.
Mark is smart and goes after a lawyer he sees in the hospital. Take your card. There, he finds a lawyer who welcomes him and he decides to hire her for 1 dollar. She accepts.

O filme é baseado no livro homônimo, de John Grisham.
Começa com dois meninos , o mais velho de 11 anos, presenciando uma tentativa de suicicio. Mark ,o mais velho dos irmãos, tenta impedir o suicidio e é agredido pelo suicida que lhe conta ser advogado de mafiosos, perseguido por estes porque conhece o local em que o corpo de um senador, assassinado , está enterrado .
Mark agora conhece o segredo pois o suicida, movido por um ato de vingança , não só lhe revela o local, como lhe dá o nome do mandante do assassinato e sua própria alcunha. E esse nome é o sinal que Mark revela, sem saber ,para o policial que descobre suas digitais dentro do carro do suicida.
A partir daí , Mark é investigado e pressionado pela justiça a dizer o que sabe.
Como é um menino que teve de amadurecer muito cedo pois, com um pai , alcoólatra, abusivo que batia em sua mãe e como filho mais velho, se sentiu tendo de proteger sua mãe e seu irmão.
Mark é inteligente e vai atrás de um advogado que vê no hospital. Pega seu cartão . Lá , encontra uma advogada que lhe acolhe e ele decide contrata-lá com 1 dólar. Ela aceita.
Ela o protege para não seja obrigado a revelar o que sabe perante uma banca de homens chefiada pelo promotor, candidato à governador.
O irmão de Mark está em coma hospitalizado após o trauma por ter presenciado o suicidio do advogado.
A pressão da banca judiciária mais FBI é grande , além da própria máfia que o ameaça de morte . Muito pressionado ele oscila em confiar ou não na advogada e descobre que esta foi alcoólatra , como o pai dele. Isso o leva a querer fugir dela também achando que cometeu um erro quando a contratou. Mas quando percebe que o perigo está no seu pé, volta atrás . E, superando todo o que sofreu com o alcoolismo de seu pai, resolveu dar uma chance a Reggie. que já largou o álcool.
Reggie tem dois filhos que ficaram com o pai na separação e não falam com ela. Destruída pelo afastamento dos filhos afundou-se no poço do álcool .
Ela está no processo de reconhecer seu próprio valor, para si mesma
Ela ampara Mark como se fosse seu próprio filho. É advogada e mãe que ele precisa nesse momento. É assim, os dois vão atrás da indicação do local onde está o cadáver do senador para confirmar a futura delação.
Com a determinação e inteligência do menino conseguem invadir o local.
Quando Reggie diz que se ele atirar se tornaria igual ao gângster ela não está se referindo a lei. Pois nesse caso a lei estaria a favor deles “ legítima defesa “. Está se referindo a um garoto ainda, não adulto , ter de lidar com a responsabilidade da morte de alguém, violência própria do mundo prepotente . Se alguém tivesse de atirar que fosse ela . Mas a placa lhe surge como uma providência divina.
Último nome da advogada é Love. Pois o só o amor é capaz de cuidar , proteger. E salvar!
A advogada não está apenas defendendo seu frágil cliente, está também lutando para se ver merecedora de conviver com seus filhos . Que ela tem valor tanto como os homens e , às vezes, até mais, do que alguns.Está provando até pra si mesma que pode ama-lós e defendê-los mesmo do pai deles. Pai que se enquadra nesse perfil de homem arrogante e egoista , dono do mundo.
Recordando a contribuição de Lacan para o entendimento do local da mulher no mundo com o pensamento: “ a mulher não existe” . Ele confirma a ideia patriarcal de que o mundo é dos homens . Isto não significa que todos os homens se enquadram nesse arquétipo masculino. Muitos homens são masculinos e têm em si a capacidade de possuírem sensibilidade, empatia e respeito por outros . Graças a Deus! Além do que, nem todas as mulheres têm em si a capacidade de cuidar, de compaixão e de doação Muitas funcionam apenas voltadas para si mesmas, mimadas e egoistas , infelizmente. Me refiro a padrões sociais onde o Homem é entendido no mundo constituído.
Pois nós não nascemos prontos como os outros animais. Somos geneticamente apenas propensos , de resto , somos construídos!
Um vínculo que se forma com amor recíproco verdadeiro , nunca se dissolve.
Como é dito no filme , para superação de nossos traumas, é necessário viver um dia de cada vez.
No final, o promotor num último momento de competição com Reggie lhe recorda que poderia ter solicitado além das outras condições para a testemunha e sua família a inserção ,por justificativa, dos próprios atos dela. Nesse momento ela mostra a gravação que fez inclusive com esse comentário.
Ainda não se dando por vencido , o futuro governador lhe oferece um emprego. Não percebendo que ela já faz um trabalho , agora reconhecido até por ele. Ela responde a essa oferta consertando a sua gravata, lhe oferecendo outra forma de convivência , não como empregada , mas como parceira .
