It was completely subservient to the commands of the German government. The Legal Department of Sweden's Ministry of Foreign Affairs was administered by EngzellA meek and fearful man who worked in a small, windowless room with an antechamber in the building's basement. He carried out orders from people in superior positions.
With his family, he was calm and lacked assertiveness. He enjoyed reading stories to his younger son, and his wife was the one who took the initiative to solve everyday problems.

His desk was full of passport applications from Jews hoping to immigrate to Sweden. They were awaiting a solution. As the applications piled up, a young woman was hired, in addition to two other men who came with the task of filing these stalled processes

The young woman, concerned about the plight of the Jews seeking refuge to avoid the torture of the Nazi "concentration camps," disagreed with the archiving of those asylum requests. The other men, without much ceremony, decided to file them away.

This is the beginning of the change for the legal department and for Engzell.

There was a special case considered "weak" for obtaining the repatriation visa for two 11-year-old twin boys whose mother, Jewish, had married a Swede. Engzell's team went to investigate the location of these boys after passports were granted to them. But, unfortunately, it is not well understood why the children, who were destined to return by train, never arrived.

Engzell's objective was to gradually alter the perverse agreement, creating more and more precedents to end the practice of marking passports of Jews with a red J. This practice, obviously, facilitated the extradition and arrest of these individuals. It was an abusive, malevolent agreement that turned Swedes into enslaved lackeys to a bloodthirsty power.

We see Engzell transforming from a fearful man, always intimidated by the arrogance of his superiors, into a determined man, convinced of his values and no longer influenced by those who consider themselves superior. He knows what to do; he recognizes what is important. In agreement with the Ministry and through a Jewish exile, he secures funds for the subsistence of the arriving immigrants.home too, in front of his family, he changes. He takes different actions and surprises, especially his youngest son, who was closest to him.

Engzell's change has no economic motives, nor does he aspire to positions of power. He simply feels alive now. He has a reason to live that makes sense, that ennobles his soul. He expands himself by giving meaning to his existence. An ordinary man who doesn't want or need to be better than anyone else, discovering within himself a dignity and intelligence that makes him unique in this world. Engzell finds himself and is happy, even while taking risks.

Based on real events. Engzell never took credit for the one hundred thousand people saved from Nazi persecution. He continued his work, in silence. But Sweden was cited in the Washington Post as a moral beacon during the Second World War. A great hero.

It takes courage, even if it's just to win within our own little world.

This film is a toast to the recognition of a great man. He, indeed, was deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize!
