[Autosaved] WAKE. UP. Dead man

 

The film begins with Father Jud being tried by his bishop for assaulting another priest. The accused asks for a second chance. The bishop suggests he move to another church in a small town in New York State, where there is a difficult priest who is losing his congregation. Father Jud agreed 

 Jud soon realises that Monsignor Wicks does not want him there.  Wicks' wealthy grandfather was the first priest at this church.

The church has no crucifix. Wicks explains that the wanton prostitute tore it down. That wanton woman was Wicks' mother, for his grandfather already had a daughter when he was ordained a priest. When he died, Martha says that his daughter went to the solicitor and saw that he didn't have a penny to his name. So she tore down the crucifix in the church and caused a general disturbance.I

And she ended up dying shortly after her father accidentally fell on her grave. Marta says that Wicks' grandfather, whom she was close to, warned her that the stone  was the apple of the devil's temptation.

   This is told to Father Jud by Wicks's assistant, the gardener's wife who lives on the church grounds. She is very devoted to Wicks.

Martha met Wicks's grandfather when she was a girl, when he arrived, and became very close to him. She knew that he did not want to leave anything to his daughter. 

    Father Jud challenges Martha, realising that she does not fully trust Wicks despite her devotion to him, and challenges her to confess everything to him. 

     In the church, the few faithful who attend are lost souls, without faith, and as such end up becoming dependent on and subservient to the Monsignor. He manipulates them because he realises that they do not believe in God or in themselves. These are the people: an alcoholic doctor, a famous cellist with an autoimmune disease, a lawyer who had to raise her father's child, a writer without imagination, in short, infantilised people who turned to the priest/Monsignor as if he were a despotic father.

    Father Jay tries to organise a meeting to talk about faith. However, he ends up being expelled from the meeting and denounced as a traitor. 

     Martha's challenge works and Jud sees Monsenhoepr leave the confessional  satisfied .

     The Monsignor decides to leave the religious ministry after a member of the group discovers that one of them, the boy raised by his sister,  is Wicks' son  . This revelation does not shake the Monsignor ; it seems that he decides to leave the Church with considerable satisfaction and self-sacrifice.

      During Mass, after a fiery and hate-filled speech, he goes to the storeroom next to the altar to rest and ends up dropping dead right there. 

     A well-known police investigator, Benoit, is called in. The priest is the only one physically close to Wicks and therefore becomes the most likely murderer. His past life of violence as a boxer exposes him even more to 

suspicion.

    Father Jud actually hides a glass as soon as he approaches the dead man's body because he finds it strange. Wicks was faking his own death so he could run away with his grandfather's fortune. But he ended up being killed. Benoit helps the priest with the investigation, but puts him through a process that includes closely monitoring the autopsy, which is extremely difficult for the priest's sensibilities. The impression given is that these steps are like a process to test Jud's innocence. 

   On a rainy night, Jud sees a ghostly figure emerging from Wick's grave. He follows the figure, slips in the mud and ends up using a gardener's scythe he found on the ground to strike the figure, then faints. After this episode, the priest goes to the police station to turn himself in as the culprit for the death of the gardener, whom he recognises when he comes to and finds the body. 

    At the entrance to the police station, he encounters the inspector, who grabs him and takes him away. He still struggles to return because guilt compels him to do so. However, Benoit, understanding what is happening, takes Jud to the home of Wicks' doctor friend and finds him dead and a body dissolved in acid, with only the bones remaining.

   Benoit then begins to explain to everyone in the church what happened and who killed Wicks. At first, he thinks it was the gardener, before he was killed, who killed him, but as he explains the case to everyone, he has  almost, let's say, a revelation.  Looking at the light coming from the top of the crypt, he realises that there is someone else to blame in this story.  

    The difficulty of acknowledging her guilt towards Grace was the hardest thing for Martha, who for years had kept all the hatred she felt for her locked away in her heart. For it would be like admitting that she wanted to be the legitimate daughter and heiress, as well as the beautiful one. That is why she could not bear Grace's presence, taking everything from her, even her life.

    This film reminds us that innocence is not always found in children or in apparent simplicity, nor even in subservience. For only the power to welcome and love reveals the value of each person. The priest projects his capacity for welcome by sculpting a Christ with enormous arms to embrace all who need him. A priest identified with his Lord.               

    And an investigator, Benoit, focused not on accusing the guilty but, above all, on recognising and defending the innocent.

    These two great men, with a great capacity for love and protection, with different beliefs, following different paths in life, are identical in their search for the truth and in serving those who need justice.

Martha's heart did not change, but it was revealed, and the road to Damascus, besides showing the sudden change in her behaviour, can also help us recognise the wheat from the chaff and realise where true value lies.

 O filme inicia com o julgamento do  padre Jud por seu bispo pois agrediu um outro padre. O acusado pede uma segunda chance. O bispo lhe propõe ir para uma outra igreja de uma pequena cidade no Estado de New York, onde tem um padre difícil que está perdendo fiéis. Padre Jud concorda.  

  .  Logo o padre Jud percebe que o monsenhor Wicks não o quer lá.  O avô de Wicks , rico , foi o primeiro padre dessa igreja.

     A igreja está sem crucifixo. Wicks lhe explica que a devassa prostituta o arrancou. Essa , a devassa , era a mãe de Wicks, pois que o avô  já tinha uma filha quando se ordenou padre. Quando ele morreu Martha conta que a filha foi ao advogado que viu que não tinha nem um tostão. Então na igreja arrancou o crucifixo e criou uma desordem geral ma igreja .

    . E ela acabou morrendo em seguida ao pai caindo em cima de seu túmulo por acidente. Marta conta que o avô de Wicks de quem era próxima lha avisou que a pedra  era a maçã da tentação do diabo.

 

     Quem conta isso ao padre Jud é a ajudante de Wicks, esposa do jardineiro que mora no terreno da igreja. Pessoa muito devota a Wicks.

     Martha conheceu o avô de Wicks quando menina quando ele chegou e ficou muito próxima a ele. Ela sabia que ele não queria deixar nada para filha. 

     Padre Jud desafia Martha, percebe que ela não confia plenamente em Wicks apesar de sua devoção a ele e a desafia a confessar-se completamente a ele. 

      Na igreja, os poucos fiéis que a frequentam são pessoas perdidas, sem fé e por tal acabam por ficarem dependentes e subservientes ao Monsenhor. Ele as manipula pois percebem que elas não acreditam em Deus e tampouco nelas mesmas. São essas pessoas. um médico alcoólatra, uma viloncelista famosa com doença auto-imune, uma advogada que teve de criar um filho de seu pai, um escritor sem imaginação, enfim pessoas infantilizadas que recorriam ao padre/ monsenhor como se fosse um pai déspota.

    O padre Jay procura fazer uma reunião para falar de fé. Porém acaba por ser expulso da reunião e denunciado como se fosse um traidor. 

     O desafio proposto à Martha funciona e Jud vê o Monsenhoepr sair do confessionário  satisfeito .

     O Monsenhor decide deixar o ministério religioso após a descoberta por parte de uma pessoa do grupo que um deles, justamente o garoto criado pela irmã,  era filho de Wicks  . Essa revelação não abalou ao Monsenhor , parece que até com bastante satisfação e abnegação decide seu afastamento da Igreja.

      Na missa , após um discurso bastante inflamado e cheio de ódio, ele sai para a despensa que fica ao lado do altar para e descansar e acaba por cair morto, ali mesmo. 

      Um conhecido investigador.     Benoit é chamado. O padre é o único que está próximo fisicamente ao Wicks e portanto torna-se o mais provável assassino. Sua pregressa vida de violência, como lutador de boxe, o expõe mais ainda a suspeição. 

        O padre Jud realmente esconde um vidro assim que se aproxima dp corpo do morto.  Wicks estava forjando a própria morte para poder fugir com a fortuna do avô. Mas acabou sendo morto . Benoit perde ajuda a ao padre na investigação porém,o faz passar por um processo que inclui acompanhamento de perto da necropsia , coisa que é extremamente difícil para a sensibilidade do padre. A impressão que dá é que essas estapas são como um processo para pôr à prova a inocência de Jud. 

        Em uma noite chuvosa Jud vê um corpo fantasmagórico saindo da campa de Wick. Ele segue esse vulto , escorrega na lama e acaba por usando uma foice de jardineiro que pegou no chão , golpear o vulto el depois desmaia. Após esse episódio o padre vai à delegacia para se entregar como culpado da morte  do jardineiro que reconhece quando, de volta a si , encontra o  corpo. 

    Na entrada da delegacia  encontra o inspetor que o agarra e o leva para fora dali.   Ainda assim luta pra voltar pois a culpa impõe que assim o faça. Mas , Benoit entendendo o que está se passando leva Jud a casa do médico amigo de Wicks e assim, encontra-o morto e um corpo dissolvido em ácido, restando apenas os ossos. 

     Benoit então começa a explicar a todos , na igreja , o que se passou e quem matou o Wicks. A princípio pensa que foi o jardineiro, antes de ser morto , que o matou mas conforme vai explicitando o caso para todos tem  quase , digamos, uma revelação.  Olhando para a claridade vindo do alto da cripta percebe que tem mais alguém culpado nessa história.  

    A dificuldade de reconhecer a culpa em relação à  Grace era o mais difícil para Martha que durante anos guardou em seu coração todo o ódio que sentia desta.  Pois seria como reconhecer que queria ser ela filha legítima e herdeira, além de bela. Daí não suportar a presença de Grace tirando-lhe tudo ,até a vida. 

 

     Esse filme nos recorda que a inocência nem sempre está na criança ou na aparente simplicidade nem sequer na subserviência. Pois só o poder de acolher e amar revela o valor de cada um. O padre progeta sua capacidade de acolhimento esculpindo um Cristo com braços enormes para abraçar a todos que precisem dele. Padre identificado com seu Senhor .               

    E um  investigador, Benoit, voltado não para acusar culpados mas, principalmente para reconhecer e defender inocentes.

   Esses dois grandes homens, com grande capacidade de amar e de proteger, com crenças diferentes , seguindo caminhos diferentes na vida, são idênticos na procura da  verdade e  para servir a quem precise de justiça.

   O coração de Martha não mudou mas foi revelado e o caminho pra Damasco além de mostrar a mudança do comportamento repentino que acontece com ela, pode também nos fazer reconhecer o joio do trigo e perceber aonde está o verdadeiro valor.  

  O lugar em que a pedra valiosa foi incrustada,  o coração.
