    This film tells the story of a retired investigator who is called upon to investigate murders at a military academy in the United States in 1830. It was based on a novel by Louis Bayard. 

    O One of the cadets was found hanged from a tree.  His heart had been ripped out. In this suspenseful atmosphere, shrouded in thick fog, the story unfolds, characterised by crimes involving the removal of body parts from corpses. 

     Unable to identify the criminal, Landor is confronted with a second crime, this time involving the removal of a sexual organ. 

     The motive for the murders is unclear, as are the images. The connection between the dead cadets is also unclear. There had been some fights between them and other cadets, but nothing serious enough to be considered a reason for the killings. 

     Landor has the help of a cadet named Alan Põe. A perceptive young man, he takes an interest in the case mainly because, after the first murder, he sees the regiment doctor's daughter crying, and he immediately falls in love with her. The girl's sadness arouses his curiosity and desire to help solve the crime. 

    After searching for motives for the murders, Landor realises how fragile the doctor's family is. His daughter has epilepsy, and her seizures are attributed to an ancestor of the family who had ties to malevolent forces. His wife is hysterical and also has seizures. His son seems violent. Finally, in this context, he attributes motives for the deaths. The doctor's daughter is beautiful, but in addition to her apparent epileptic seizures, she also seems depressed and ill.    When she realises that Põe is in love with her, she asks him to undergo a ritual in which his blood is drained and her brother intends to attack him with a dagger, but is stopped by Landor, who finds them at that moment.  

    Alan Põe,  recovered , goes looking for Landor. He finds him in his cabin . Põe , looking disappointed, explains his theory about the deaths  and the escape of another cadet to the investigator.  He tells him how convenient it was for Landor  to investigate a crime that he himself had committed.  He tells him that after talking to a girl who works in a tavern,

 he understood the motive for the murders. She  told him that Landor's daughter did not run away with a boy but instead  killed herself after a tragic incident. After a party, on her way home, she was raped by three cadets . 

Landor agreed and said that he tried to calm her down and help her overcome the incident, but she was completely devastated and could not bear to live under the impact of the physical and psychological violence she had suffered. Then, one morning, she climbed onto a rock and threw herself into the abyss. 

   He asks  if he will go after the last cadet who, out of fear, thinking he would be the next victim, fled. Landor says no, as it was enough for him to live in fear. 

    Põe, despite being disappointed with his research tutor , says no. 

     After this dialogue, Landor, feeling victorious and avenged, goes to the rock where his daughter threw herself and releases a ribbon of hair into the wind. As if he were finally setting her free.

     The film brings us the very interesting story of a father who loses his daughter because he was unable to defend her from the violence, evil and cowardice of people without dignity. People who enjoy destroying other people's lives. People driven by the desire to fulfil their own ambitions, even if it means ‘killing’ the souls of people who lived with dignity and self-esteem. 

     Landor, parents cannot protect their children from harassment and violence from others. Like Landor, fathers and mothers blame themselves for not being able to prevent their children from being captured by people who approach them to destroy their dignity and physical or moral integrity. Living with the helplessness of not being able to free them from evil is the worst anguish that can happen to parents. 

    However, recognising that this powerlessness is the great challenge of motherhood/fatherhood, as it is impossible to control the world around us. The bad influences and temptations of evil that exist in the world. There are many people without character who tempt others with the promise of an easy life, ranging from stealing from their own family to drug trafficking, rape and murder.

  Landor thinks he has won, that justice has finally been done. But it would be fairer to himself and his daughter if he had recognised his own limitations in relation to the wickedness of people in the world, instead of arrogantly seeking justice through revenge, which certainly does not free either his daughter or himself from any guilt. It only ends up reinforcing his own pride, bringing him a false victory and even more guilt.  

     Creating memorials about the Holocaust or the atomic bomb is not to remember these historical events as examples to follow, nor is it to make them heroic. On the contrary, it is to remind us that we have choices to make. Always. Choices between principles that are based on values. These values are ideas related to the way of being that I build within myself. As a result, I am the way my being emanates in my attitudes. So, if I think I can be the master of the world, that I am better than everyone else, I will try to make everyone my slaves, oppress, torture and kill those who contradict me, I will try to be Hitler in life. If I create within myself the idea that I am the judge of the world, I will persecute, torture, and kill everyone I decide should be judged. This was the idea spread in the patriarchy of the time, using the law of retaliation.

      If my idea is that we are all equal, then I will not mirror the destructive anger or greed of others, or their arrogance. I forgive their hatred, and thus I can make choices based on essential and irreplaceable values. This is true forgiveness. It promotes the distinction between the wheat and the chaff. It creates memorials so that we do not repeat them.

And that is why Põe challenges Landor. A young man of great dignity and wisdom. Realising the integrity of Põe's character, Landor regrets not having 

   

Os Olhos de Alan Põe

    Esse filme nos conta sobre um investigador aposentado que é chamado para investigar assassinatos em uma Academia militar nos EUA em 1830. Foi baseado num romance de Louis Bayard. 

     Um dos cadetes foi encontrado enforcado em uma árvore.  Com o coração arrancado. Nesse clima de suspense em meio à muita névoa, que se desenrola é caracterizado por crimes que envolvem subtração de partes dos corpos dos cadáveres. 

     Sem conseguir apontar o criminoso Landor se depara com um segundo crime onde o órgão sexual desta vez é que é arrancado. 

     O motivo dos assassinatos é nebuloso assim como as imagens. E a ligação entre os cadetes mortos também. Algumas brigas entre eles e outros cadetes já haviam ocorrido mas nada suficientemente grave para que fosse considerado razão para as mortes. 

      Landor tem a ajuda de um cadete que é Alan Põe. Rapaz perspicaz que  se interessa pelo caso principalmente porque após o primeiro assassinato  vê passar, chorando,  a filha do médico do regimento por quem ele se apaixona imediatamente .  A tristeza da moça lha instiga a curiosidade e vontade de ajudar na elucidação do crime. 

       Depois de procurar motivos para os assassinatos Landor percebe a fragilidade da família do médico. A filha deste tem epilepsia e seus ataques são atribuídos a um antepassado da família que tinha relações com forças malevolas. Sua esposa é histérica e tem ataques também . Seu filho parece violento. Enfim nesse contexto ele atribui motivos para as mortes . A filha do médico é linda mas além dos ataques aparentemente de epilepsia também parece deprimida e doente. Quando ela se dá conta que Põe está apaixonado,por ela , pede que ele se submeta a um ritual onde seu sangue é drenado e seu irmão lhe pretende agredir com um punhal, sendo impedido por Landor que os encontra nesse momento.  

    Alan Põe,  recuperado , vai à procura de Landor. Encontra-o em sua cabana . Põe , com ar decepcionado expõe ao investigador sua teoria sobre as mortes  e a fuga de um outro cadete.  Diz-lhe que conveniente foi para Landor  investigar um crime que ele próprio havia cometido.  Diz-lhe que após conversa com uma moça que trabalha numa taberna

 entendeu o motivo dos assassinatos. Esta  lhe contou que filha dele Landor, não fugiu com um rapaz mas ao invés disso  matou-se, depois de um trágico incidente. Após uma festa , na saída, indo para casa foi estuprada por três cadetes . 

     Landor quis saber se Põe ia denunciá-lo. Conta que tentou acalma-la e convencê-la a superar incidente . Mas  ela estava completamente devastada e com a violência física e emocional causada pela perversidade deles. No outro dia, pela manhã, levantou-se e , desejando livrar-se de todo dor e sofrimento foi a uma pedra que dada e um abismo e se jogou de lá.

      Põe pergunta  se ele vai atrás do último cadete que, por medo, entendendo ser a próxima vítima, fugiu. Landor diz que não, pois já lhe bastava que ele vivesse com o medo. 

     Põe, apesar de decepcionado com seu tutor de investigação , diz que não. 

     Landor após esse diálogo, sentindo-se vitorioso e vingado, vai à pedra de onde sua filha se jogou e solta uma fita de cabelo ao vento. Como se 

estivesse dando liberdade a ela, finalmente.

     Muito interessante nos traz o filme o sofrimento de um pai que perde a filha pois não conseguiu defendê-la da violência, da maldade e covardia de pessoas sem dignidade. Pessoas que se divertem em destruir vidas de outras pessoas. Pessoas movidas pela vontade de realizar as próprias ambições mesmo que precisem “matar” a alma de pessoas que viviam com dignidade e auto estima. 

    Assim como Landor os pais não conseguem proteger seus filhos do assédio e da violência dos outros. Assim como Landor, pais e mães se culpam por não terem conseguido evitar que seus filhos fosse capturados por  pessoas que se aproximam para destruir a dignidade e integridade física ou moral.  Conviver com a impotência de não conseguir livra-los do mal é a pior angústia que pode acontecer aos genitores. 

    Porém reconhecer que essa impotência é o grande desafio da maternidade/paternidade, pois é impossível controlar o mundo à volta . As más influências e as tentações da malignidade que existe no mundo. As pessoas sem caráter que convencem com tentações de vida fácil ,que vão desde o roubo da própria família até tráfico de drogas, estrupo e assassinatos,  são muitas.

    Landor acha que venceu, que finalmente fez justiça. Mas seria mais justo consigo mesmo e com sua filha também se tivesse reconhecido seus próprios limites em relação à perversidade das pessoas no mundo, ao invés de, arrogantemente , fazer justiça na vingança que, certamente, não liberta nem a sua filha e nem a si mesmo de nenhuma culpa. Só acaba por reforçar sua própria soberba lhe trazendo uma falsa vitória e ainda mais culpa.  

    Criar memoriais sobre Holocausto ou Bomba atômica não é pra recordar esses eventos históricos como exemplos a seguir não é para torná-los heróicos. Ao contrário é para nos lembrar que temos escolhas a fazer. Sempre.  Escolhas entre princípios que se apoiam em valores. Esses valores são ideias relacionadas com o modo de ser que construo em mim. Em consequência , sou o modo como  meu ser emana em minhas atitudes. Logo, se penso que posso ser o dono do mundo que sou melhor do que todos vou tentar fazer todos meus escravos, oprimir , torturar e matar quem me contraria, vou tentar ser Hitler na vida. Se crio em mim a ideia de que sou  o  juiz do mundo vou perseguir , torturar e matar todos que eu resolver que devam ser julgados.  Essa era a ideia difundida no patriarcado da época, utilizando a lei de Talião.

   Se , minha ideia é de que somos todos iguais, então, não vou me espelhar na raiva ou ganância  destruidora do outro, na arrogância. Perdoo o ódio desses ,e, assim posso fazer escolhas baseadas em valores essenciais e insubstituíveis. Esse é o verdadeiro perdão. O que promove a distinção entre o joio e o  trigo. Que faz os memoriais para não repeti-los.

 E por isso  Põe contesta Landor.  Jovem rapaz de muita dignidade e sabedoria.  Dando-se conta da integridade do caráter de Põe , Landor lamenta não te-lo conhecido antes..
