The film recounts the retrospective of an actor's life, culminating in an event in his honour.
Jay is at the end of his career. He is an acclaimed actor. But he does not feel fulfilled; on the contrary, he feels lonely. He has two daughters and broken marriages. He has problems with both daughters.
Jay meets a former classmate from acting school who was very talented but failed to demonstrate that talent in auditions, and was therefore forced to seek another profession. This friend convinces him to have coffee together, and during this meeting, the former classmate expresses all the hurt and envy he feels towards Jay..His colleague, currently a child therapist, saw in this choice the possibility of building a family and closely following his children's growth. The rival says he knows about the difficulties Jay's eldest daughter has with him and that he has referred her to a therapist. This upsets the actor. This encounter leads to physical violence between the two.
From then on, Jay, who feels lonely and abandoned by his daughters, decides to look for them.
With a black eye, she goes with her beautician and her agent to look for her daughters. She visits her eldest daughter, who is married and teaches young children, happy with her career choice. She lives modestly and refuses money from her father, who tries to buy his way into her life. She seeks to build a closer relationship with him by taking him to a session with her therapist. Jay, however, refuses this emotional exposure and leaves.
He takes a train that his youngest daughter is supposed to be on and actually finds her with her friends and boyfriend. He tries, unsuccessfully, to bring her to the tribute they are planning for him in Italy. He argues with her again when she tells him she has decided to become an actress because she is dating a budding filmmaker who wants her to star in his first film. Jay wants to dissuade her from this idea, trying to buy her off, offering money and comfort, which obviously offends her.
Jay has difficulty with his emotions. He tries to relate to others superficially, using his surplus money literally as a currency to buy affection. His daughters are authentic people, with an inner world of self-esteem and dignity. His youngest daughter tries to tell him this when she says she is smarter than him. He responds by talking about his own life experience, not understanding that she is referring to the recognition of the values that give meaning to life, self-awareness and what is not ephemeral that leads to emptiness.
Emptiness is what he feels, which he confuses with loneliness when he tells his daughter that he is alone, and she replies that he is never alone.
In fact, you are never alone, but you are always outside yourself, far from yourself. You want to resolve with action, with money, what belongs to the world of self-construction.
He calls his daughter and they argue again. He starts walking and on the way he meets a colleague, a famous actor, with whom he has shared the same agent for many years. His colleague tells him that he has fired his agent, who is old and tired. This colleague is a proud man who tells his employee that he would have liked to fire him by email, but his wife advised him to do it in person. He is with his whole family, a large group, and asks for tickets to Jay's tribute. Jay is also surrounded by his family, but he is empty and indifferent, playing a character who gets along with everyone. With a lot of falseness.
Jay walks all night, alone, but for the first time accompanied by himself, reflecting on his feelings, behaviours, ingratitude, superficiality and selfishness.
When he arrives at the hotel in the morning, he finds his agent leaving. He had treated him badly at the party, as had his colleague, treating his agent as if he were a slave, someone who has no consideration , a person who, although he had been serving him for years, was an insignificant person whose human value was not recognised, someone whose dignity had been stripped away .
Jay now asks him to stay for the tribute as a personal friend. Without his usual arrogance, he invites him, showing gratitude and appreciation. Ron accepts.
In this tribute, Jay looks back on his professional life and realises his value and merit for practising his profession with love and dedication, something he has passed on to his daughters, who also seek to find fulfilment in their chosen professions with satisfaction and commitment. He discovers his value and his qualities and sees himself with dignity.
And as the beginning of the film tells us, it is difficult to be ourselves! Playing a character is easy, because we can also hide behind it.
But being inside ourselves, reflecting on who we are and feeling what we feel, is living our own lives and not simply passing through them as mere spectators. Life cannot be repeated or erased. At some point, life takes its toll on the injustices, the indifference, the inhumanity we commit in our choice
O filme relata a retrospectiva da vida de um ator que culmina em um evento de homenagem a ele.
Jay está em final de carreira . É ator consagrado. Mas não se sente realizado, ao contrário se sente só . Tem duas filhas e casamentos desfeitos. Tem problemas com ambas as filhas. Jay encontra um ex - colega do curso de ator que tinha muito talento mas não conseguiu demonstrar esse talento nos testes, e por isso foi obrigado a procurar outra profissão. Esse amigo o convence a tomar café juntos e nesse encontro o ex-colega expõe toda a magoa e inveja que sente por Jay. O colega atualmente terapeuta infantil teve nessa escolha, a possibilidade de construir uma família e acompanhar o crescimento dos filhos de perto. O rival diz saber das dificuldades que a filha mais velha de Jay tem com ele e que indicou um terapeuta para ela. Isso deixa o ator transtornado. Esse encontro desemboca em violência física entre os dois.
A partir dai, Jay que se sente só e abandonado por suas filhas resolve procura-las.
Com um olho roxo vai com sua esteticista e seu agente à procura de suas filhas. Visita a mais velha que é casada , professora de crianças pequenas , feliz em sua escolha profissional. Vive modestamente e recusa dinheiro de seu pai que tenta conquistar espaço em sua vida , comprando-a. Ela busca uma aproximação afetiva com ele levando-o a uma sessão com o terapeuta dela. Jay porém recusa essa exposição afetiva e vai embora.
Pega um trem que supostamente estaria sua filha mais nova e de fato a encontra com seus amigos e namorado. Tenta, inutilmente, trazê-la à homenagem na Itália que farão a ele. Novamente briga com ela também , quando esta comunica que decidiu ser atriz pois está namorando um iniciante a cineasta que a quer como a atriz de seu primeiro filme. Jay quer demovê-la dessa ideia, tentando comprá-la, oferecendo dinheiro e conforto, o que obviamente, a ofende.
Jay tem dificuldades com suas emoções. Procura se relacionar na superficialidade colocando o dinheiro , que sobra pra ele, literalmente como moeda de troca de afeto. Suas filhas são pessoas autênticas , com mundo interior de auto-estima e dignidade. Sua filha mais nova procura dizer isso a ele quando diz que é mais inteligente do que ele. Ele responde falando da própria experiência de vida, não entende que ela se refere ao reconhecimento dos valores que dão sentido à vida, à auto consciência e ao que não é efêmero que leva ao vazio.
Vazio é o que ele sente e que confunde com solidão quando diz que está sozinho a sua filha que responde que ele nunca está sozinho.
De fato nunca está só mas está sempre fora de si , longe de si mesmo. Quer resolver com ação, com dinheiro o que pertence ao mundo da construção do si mesmo.
Essa é a sua burrice denunciada por sua filha. E sua superficialidade.
No encontro com seu pai, que seu agente convidou para a homenagem na Itália, sente-se desconfortável. O trata falsamente coisa que seu pai percebe e sentindo-se mal prefere voltar pra casa, desiludido e ressentido com a ingratidão do filho. A indiferença que seu pai demonstra nessa atitude o faz sentir que há algo de errado consigo.
Liga pra sua filha e novamente se desentendem. Começa a andar e no caminho encontra um colega , ator famoso, com quem divide o mesmo agente há muitos anos. Este lhe conta ter demitido esse agente que está velho e cansado. Esse colega é um cara soberbo que conta para o próprio funcionário que gostaria de tê-lo demitido por e-mail mas sua esposa lhe aconselhou fazê-lo pessoalmente. Ele está com toda a família grupo grande e pede entradas para a homenagem de Jay. Este também está rodeado da família mas é vazio e indiferente, faz um personagem que se entende com todos. Com muita falsidade.
Jay caminha a noite inteira , sozinho , mas pela primeira vez acompanhado consigo mesmo, refletindo sobre sues sentimentos, comportamentos, ingratidões, superficialidades e egoísmos.
Quando chega ao hotel, já pela manhã, encontra seu agente indo embora. Ele o havia tratado mal na festa assim como o seu colega, tratava se agente como se fosse um escravo, alguém que não se tem consideração , uma pessoa que embora estivesse lhe servindo há anos, era um insignificante a quem não se reconhece valor humano, alguém a quem se destituiu a dignidade .
Jay agora pede pra que ele fique para a homenagem como amigo pessoal. Sem a arrogância costumeira ele o convida demonstrando gratidão e reconhecimento. Ron aceita.
Nessa homenagem Jay vê passar sua vida profissional e se dá conta do seu valor e mérito por exercer com amor e dedicação sua profissão coisa que passou para suas filhas que buscam também se encontrar nas profissões escolhidas com satisfação e empenho. Descobre seu valor. Suas qualidades e vê a si mesmo, com dignidade.
