        The movie is based on the novel of the same name by William Diehl.  

William Diehl.  It tells the story of a young man accused of stabbing an archbishop several times, a very violent crime. The young man is arrested by the police with the cleric's blood on his clothes and a ring of him on his finger. He was fleeing the scene of the crime. A very famous lawyer is watching the police chase on the news while ,he is in the bar giving an interview to a journalist. At that moment, he rushes off to find the young alleged murderer who has ben captured.       

        Martin Vail offers to defend the guy in court, free of charge. This lawyer, now a defender, used to be a prosecutor, but has since left office. He interviewed the journalist about his professional career. He didn't feel comfortable condemning people who, deep down, he suspected were innocent. That's why he changes sides and is in conflict with his girlfriend, a former assistant, who has accepted the job as a prosecutor that he gave up.

           Anyway, the film generates around the option of this lawyer and his trajectory

 He gets a deal for another client. But in the agreement the otherk party requires that this customer leaves the city. The customer, but does not agree to leave, claims that he wants to stay in this city even taking risks. Martin insists that he leaves and warns of the dangerousness of the other party.

        Finally, Martin, despite being famous and made a lot of money advocating in defense, seeks to stay aligned with his convictions of justice. This client later suffers an attack being thrown from a bridge in Chicago. Martin is dismayed.

It is with a look of benevolence and protection that Martin approaches Aaron, a seemingly frightened and defenseless young man, being accused of a crime that would lead him to the condemnation of death.

 He believes in innocence or, always part of it, in the confrontation of his customers. But at one point all facts lead to Aaron's guilt. So the lawyer calls a friend, educator, to accompany Aron and do some tests. Aaron when he touches the name of his missing girlfriend and with whom he intended to marry, he goes out. He says he feels pressure on his head and becomes aggressive, full of hatred, causing fear in the educator. It demonstrates to have another personality, spit from the one I presented before, and even recognize himself with another name, demonstrating a complete separation between the two modes of being. The angry Aaron, however, recognizes Aaron quiet and fearful and accuses him of coward. The Aaron, "innocent" but completely unaware of this other way of being his, violent and wicked and complains of memory lapses when the other manifests himself. That way he turns out to blame himself but always blaming his father's trauma. Presents himself as a sick .

           Martin's reaction is again protective and benevolent and despite knowing the guilt of his client can change the defense to mental insanity.  This attitude delivers Aaron from prison, leading

Martin is mistaken this time, his faith in his clients' innocence leads him to choose a position and attitude in life. He does not judge, bet on the good, without malice, prefers the error for the excessive benevolence of doubt than the unfair condemnation. And that is what makes him be the great lawyer who has become. He opens his heart to the interviewer and as a secret, reveals that what moves him is his desirec to save others from an unfair condemnation of men.

 After all, behind the cold And self-interested man lives the sensitive and fair man.

          For humans, achieving the truth is not always possible. After all, even our most reliable sciences are always suppositions.

        O Filme é baseado no romance do mesmo nome de William Diehl.  Nos conta a história de um rapaz acusado de esfaquear um arcebispo com várias facadas , um crime muito violento. Esse jovem é preso pela polícia com sangue do clerico nas roupas e um anel deste no dedo. Estava fugindo da cena do crime. Um advogado, muito famoso, está vendo pela televisão a perseguição policial no noticiário enquanto está no bar dando entrevista a um jornalista. E , nesse momento, sai às pressas, indo procurar o jovem suposto assassino capturado.

           Martin Vail  propõe ao jovem defendê-lo judicialmente, de forma gratuita. Esse advogado, agora defensor, já foi promotor, tendo deixado o cargo. É sobre sua trajetória profissional que ele dá entrevista ao jornalista. Ele não se sentia bem condenando as pessoas que, no fundo de si, mantinha suspeita sobre a inocência destes. Por isso muda de lado e está em conflito com sua namorada , ex-assistente , que aceitou o cargo de promotora que ele largou. 

              Enfim, o filme gera em torno da opção desse advogado e sua trajetória. Ele consegue um acordo para um outro cliente.mas no acordo a outra parte exige que esse cliente vá embora da cidade. O cliente , porém não concorda em sair , alega que quer ficar nessa cidade mesmo correndo riscos. Martin insiste para que ele saia e avisa sobre a periculosidade da outra parte. 

Enfim, Martin apesar de famoso e de ter ganhado muito dinheiro  advogando na defesa, procura manter-se alinhado com suas convicções de justiça. Esse cliente mais tarde sofre um atentado sendo jogado de uma ponte em Chicago. Martin fica consternado.

              É com olhar de benevolência e proteção que Martin se aproxima de Aaron, um jovem aparentemente assustado e indefeso, sendo acusado de um crime que o levaria à condenação de morte. Acredita na inocência ou , parte dela sempre, no confronto de seus clientes. Mas, num determinado momento todos os fatos levam para a culpabilidade de Aaron. Então, o advogado chama uma  amiga , educadora,  para acompanhar Aron e lhe fazer alguns testes. Aaron quando se toca no nome de sua namorada , desaparecida, e com quem tencionava casar-se , entra em surto. Diz sentir pressão na cabeça e torna-se agressivo, cheio de ódio,  causando medo na pedagoga. Demonstra ter outra personalidade, cindida da que apresentava antes, e até se reconhece com outro nome, demonstrando uma separação completa entre os dois modos de ser. O Aaron irado, porém, reconhece o Aaron quieto e medroso e o acusa de covarde. O Aaron, “ inocente “ porém desconhece por completo esse outro modo de ser seu,  violento e perverso e queixa-se de lapsos de memória quando o outro se manifesta. Dessa forma ele acaba por se culpabilizar mas sempre colocando a culpa em traumas provocado por seu pai . Apresenta-se como doente necessitando de tratamento.

            Martin se engana dessa vez , sua fé na inocência de seus clientes o leva a escolher uma posição e atitude na vida. Ele não julga, aposta no bem, sem malícia ,prefere o erro pela excessiva benevolência da dúvida do que a condenação injusta. E é isso que o faz ser o grande advogado que se tornou. Ele abre seu coração ao entrevistador e como um segredo, revela que o que o move é o seu desejo de salvar o próximo de uma condenação injusta dos homens.  Afinal por trás da máscara de homem frio e interesseiro habita o secreto homem sensível e justo.

          Alcançar a verdade nem sempre é  possível para os humanos. Afinal até a nossas ciências mais fidedignas , são sempre suposições.
