    O Filme nos fala sobre o vício. É baseado em fatos reais. Crime ocorrido nos EUA sobre suborno de médicos por uma indústria farmacêutica  para administração de substância  analgésica , fentanil .

     Liza Drake é uma mãe que cria sua filha adolescente sem ajuda do pai. Vive trocando de emprego sempre com dificuldades financeiras. Conhece um homem no bar de strippers em que trabalha . Ela o faz embriagar-se.  Dia seguinte lhe telefona dizendo que ele lhe ofereceu um emprego. Consegue o endereço de trabalho dele e vai ao seu encontro no momento que ele está tentando convencer a um banqueiro a financiar a medicação analgésica. Ele é um grande oportunista e se  aproveita da chegada dela fazendo-lhe um curriculum para apresenta-la como especialista pós- doutora  ligada a uma empresa farmacêutica. De forma a conseguir contrata-la. Ele lhe dá 5 dias para conseguir convencer um médico a prescrever a medicação a base  fentanil.

     Liza procura um médico que tem pacientes oncológicos e que prescreve medicações analgésicas. Mas nada consegue. No último dia de seu contrato volta ao  consultório do médico e , por acaso ouve  a queixa de dor de um  paciente com câncer . Conseguiu convencer ao médico prescrever a medicação . Conseguiu o emprego. O remédio funcionava para tratamento de doenças terminais . Mas como analgésico em outros casos  induzia ao vício até a morte. 

     Liza não se enquadrava muito naquele clima de festas e ostentação. Não se sentia confortável.  Filha de Liza teve de fazer uma cirurgia no cérebro . Liza então percebe a futilidade da vida que tinha e decidiu sair daquele ciclo viciante de suborno e manipulação e morte.  Com ajuda da mãe que teve um caso com o dono da empresa conseguiu as provas para a condenação de todos. 

     A alteração de consciência com propósito de negar a realidade e promover o bem estar é uma aspiração humana em todas as épocas e culturas.  Temos na cultura indígena brasileira o ayahuasca, a ibogaína usada em rituais de  tribos africanas, o cerveja dos egípicios além do vinho romano, além do cogumelos .

    Enfim ,  as substâncias que alteram a consciência, afastam o desconforto das ansiedades da vida e visam  provocar uma sensação de prazer ligado ao transmissor dopamina. A sensação de prazer cria uma memória que incita a repetição de seu consumo.  A  quantidade inicialmente consumida pelo indivíduo sofre um processo chamado de “tolerância” que não permite mais alcançar o mesmo prazer experimentado anteriormente. Logo é  necessário que a dosagem seja cada vez maior para poder se manter o mesmo nível de efeito.

    As chamadas drogas, sejam elas lícitas ou ilícitas, se instalam por esse mecanismo de dependência , ligadas ao prazer. 

    Mas o filme não nos fala só desse prazer , dessa dependência. Fala  também do prazer que está subjacente à ganância humana. Principalmente no personagem Brenner e no dono da empresa fica claro. O vício por ter cada vez mais dinheiro, mesmo prejudicando ao outro, é incontrolável. As festas, a ostentação do poder econômico é irrefreável. Uma necessidade de se mostrar vencedor nesse mundo competitivo. Pois, não se é estimulado  a ser colaborador , generoso e  prestativo. Mas a mostrar que tem o melhor carro, casa , que é vencedor,  inteligente, forte , feliz , para provocar a inveja do outro e dessa forma aplacar a própria inveja.

  Mas a falta da verdadeira auto-estima  é como a falta da dopamina ,  faz com que  a necessidade de admiração do outro e a provocação de inveja sofram também um processo de “tolerância”.  Logo é preciso que tenha sempre de se ganhar mais mesmo que essa a prática leve a se tornar completamente dominado  pelos próprios impulsos.

    Pois a ganância , o egoísmo, a indiferença em relação ao outro, podemos encontrar em qualquer etnia, gênero sexual, nacionalidade , profissão , classe social e escolaridade.  O caráter convive com qualquer aspecto biológico , intelectual, religioso e civilizatório. O caráter está para além deles ou apesar deles. E é ele que vai definir se é Dr. Jekill  ou Mr. Hyde

.The film tells us about addiction. It's based on real events. A crime took place in the USA, where doctors were bribed by a pharmaceutical company to administer the painkiller fentanyl.

     Liza Drake is a mother raising her teenage daughter without any help from her father. She keeps changing jobs, always struggling financially. She meets a man in the stripper bar where she works. She gets him drunk.  The next day she phones him to say that he has offered her a job. She gets his work address and goes to meet him just as he is trying to convince a banker to finance his painkilling medication. He's a great opportunist and takes advantage of her arrival by giving her a CV to present her as a post-doctoral specialist linked to a pharmaceutical company. In order to get her hired. He gives her five days to convince a doctor to prescribe fentanyl-based medication.

     Liza looks for a doctor who treats cancer patients and prescribes painkillers. But nothing came of it. On the last day of her contract, she returns to the doctor's office and, by chance, hears a cancer patient complaining of pain. He manages to convince the doctor to prescribe the medication. He got the job. The drug worked for treating terminal illnesses. But as a painkiller in other cases it induced addiction to the point of death. 

     Liza didn't really fit in with the atmosphere of parties and ostentation. She didn't feel comfortable.  Liza's daughter had to have brain surgery. Liza then realised the futility of her life and decided to get out of that addictive cycle of bribery, manipulation and death.  With the help of her mother, who had an affair with the owner of the company, she managed to get the evidence to convict everyone. 

     Altering consciousness in order to deny reality and promote well-being is a human aspiration in all eras and cultures.  We have ayahuasca in indigenous Brazilian culture, ibogaine used in rituals by African tribes, the beer of the Egyptians, as well as Roman wine and mushrooms.

    In short, substances that alter consciousness, remove the discomfort of life's anxieties and aim to provoke a sensation of pleasure linked to the dopamine transmitter. The sensation of pleasure creates a memory that encourages repeated consumption.  The amount initially consumed by the individual undergoes a process called "tolerance" which no longer allows them to achieve the same pleasure experienced previously. It is therefore necessary to increase the dosage in order to maintain the same level of effect.

    The so-called drugs, whether licit or illicit, are established through this mechanism of dependence, linked to pleasure. 

    But the film doesn't just tell us about this pleasure, this dependence. It also talks about the pleasure that underlies human greed. This is particularly evident in the characters Brenner and the owner of the company. The addiction to having more and more money, even at the expense of others, is uncontrollable. The parties, the ostentatious display of economic power is unstoppable. A need to be a winner in this competitive world. You're not encouraged to be collaborative, generous and helpful. But to show that you have the best car, the best house, that you're a winner, intelligent, strong, happy, in order to provoke the envy of others and thus appease your own envy.

  But the lack of true self-esteem is like the lack of dopamine, it causes the need for admiration from others and the provocation of envy to also undergo a process of "tolerance".  So you always have to earn more, even if this practice leads you to become completely dominated by your own impulses.

    Greed, selfishness and indifference to others can be found in any ethnicity, gender, nationality, profession, social class and education level.  Character coexists with every biological, intellectual, religious and civilising aspect. Character is beyond them or in spite of them. And it is character that will define whether you are Dr Jekyll or Mr Hyde.
