     Esse filme  desenrola-se em uma cidade mexicana  que faz fronteira com os Estados Unidos  e a travessia de seu rio é muito usada para a imigração ilegal. 

     O protagonista é um garoto de 12 anos que vive com seus pais, viajando pelo país.  Seu pai constrói trilhos de ferrovia. Ikal ,muito sociável logo interage com outras crianças acabando por encontrar  no rio o corpo de um homem que deixa um cão . Esse cão segue Ikal e assim ele acaba por conhecer a professora da escolinha da vila que se interessa por sua escolaridade e, junto aos seus pais propõe que ele frequente ás aulas. Ikal que é analfabeto pois nunca permaneceu tempo suficiente num lugar . Ele resiste a ideia , talvez por medo ou vergonha . Mas o argumento da professora de que cuidaria do cão, única possibilidade dele ficar com o bichinho , conseguiu convencê-lo. Começa , então,  o caminho de Ikal na vila, nos livros e na escola. 

      Ainda um tanto distraído e pouco entusiasmado acaba por se interessar realmente  quando a professora lhe oferece um gibi de seu herói preferido. Ikal reluta em se inserir naquele lugar , no colégio , por medo de ter de se separar das pessoas pois sabe que em algum momento terá de deixá-los . A paixão que Valeria , uma menina da vila, desperta nele também contribui para decisão de ceder a se integrar na escola. 

      Ikal está feliz , gosta de aprender e tem na professora uma pessoa que o incentiva a estudar. A professora perdeu seu marido e filho, ainda bem jovem, em um  acidente de carro e talvez , pela semelhança de Ikal com seu filho ou até pela permanência provisória dele, ela se dedica e procura orientá-lo.  Um dever de casa que solicita vê no peixinho que Ikal traz ,uma salamandra. Pois a salamandra pode sobreviver e se adaptar  em qualquer lugar . Ele é como uma salamandra , ela diz. Um dia lhe pergunta o que sonha em ser quando crescer e ele não sabe. Nunca havia pensado ou sonhado com um futuro . Sua vida , luta de dia a dia de seu pai e sua mãe doente, fica difícil sonhar nessas circunstâncias.

        Em um acidente na ferrovia num dia de chuva e raios seu pai e e,eletrocutado ,morre junto com outros trabalhadores. Com a mãe doente  Ikal tem de ir pra casa da tia, na Cidade do México.

        Professora Georgina o incentiva a sonhar a ter disciplina pra alcançar seus sonhos. Isso é educar!  Fazem última foto antes de sua partida e recebe da professora livro de Júlio Verne “ A volta ao mundo em 80 dias”.  Às vezes navegar é preciso…

         Anos depois, político  quer fechar escola da vila pobre ,afinal para que o consumo aumente a mão de obra tem de ser barata. Estudar nesse caso, não é uma boa ideia.   O que resta a essa população é tentar imigrar . O funcionário  responsável por essa empreitada, de encerrar a escola,  procurar dissuadir o político, em vão. 

        O filme não é sobre simples instrução mas sobre construir um sujeito criativo que tem em si capacidade de gerar significados éticos e estéticos mesmo sobre pressão e que podem promover mudança construtiva no mundo. Um sujeito com consciência de seu estado de indivíduo único no mundo com sua subjetividade e capacidade de criar significados e sonhos. Com poder de apreciar a beleza do céu espelhado no mar após a tormenta e que, portanto, não tenha em si, uma alma pequena. Relembrando  F Pessoa.

 This film takes place in a Mexican town that borders the United States and whose river crossing is often used for illegal immigration. 

     The protagonist is a 12-year-old boy who lives with his parents, travelling around the country.  His father builds railway tracks. Ikal, who is very sociable, soon interacts with other children and ends up finding the body of a man in the river who has left behind a dog. The dog follows Ikal and he meets a teacher from the village school who takes an interest in his schooling and, together with his parents, suggests that he attend classes. Ikal, who is illiterate, has never stayed in one place long enough. He resists the idea, perhaps out of fear or shame. But the teacher's argument that she would look after the dog, which was the only way he could keep it, convinced him. So began Ikal's journey through the village, books and school. 

      Still a little distracted and unenthusiastic, he ends up taking a real interest when his teacher gives him a comic book of his favourite hero. Ikal is reluctant to fit in there, at school, for fear of having to separate himself from the people because he knows that at some point he will have to leave them. The passion that Valeria, a girl from the village, arouses in him also contributes to his decision to give in and join the school. 

      Ikal is happy, enjoys learning and has a teacher who encourages him to study. The teacher lost her husband and son at a young age in a car accident, and perhaps because of Ikal's resemblance to her son, or even his temporary stay, she is dedicated and tries to guide him.  The homework she is asked to do can be seen in the little fish that Ikal is carrying, a salamander. A salamander can survive and adapt anywhere. He's like a salamander, she says. One day she asks him what he dreams of being when he grows up and he doesn't know. He had never thought or dreamed of a future. His life, the day-to-day struggle of his father and his sick mother, makes it difficult to dream in these circumstances.

        In an accident on the railway, on a day of rain and lightning, his father is electrocuted and dies along with other workers. With his mother ill, Ikal has to go to his aunt's house in Mexico City.

        His teacher Georgina encourages him to dream and to have the discipline to achieve his dreams. That's education!  They take their last photo before leaving and he receives Jules Verne's book "Around the World in 80 Days" from his teacher.  Sometimes navigating is necessary...

         Years later, a politician wants to close a school in a poor village - after all, for consumption to increase, labour must be cheap. Studying in this case is not a good idea.   What's left for these people is to try to immigrate. The official responsible for this endeavour, to close the school, tries to dissuade the politician, to no avail. 

        The film is not about simple instruction, but about building a creative subject who has the capacity to generate ethical and aesthetic meanings even under pressure, and who can promote constructive change in the world. A subject who is aware of their status as a unique individual in the world, with their subjectivity and ability to create meanings and dreams. With the power to appreciate the beauty of the sky mirrored in the sea after the storm and who, therefore, does not have a small soul. Remembering F. Pessoa.
