      Filme é apoiado em um acontecimento real, um bombardeio que  ocorreu sobre uma escola dinamarquesa, durante a Segunda Grande Guerra .

      Filme inicia  com  um ataque Aéreo a um carro de aluguel  com  três moças, por um erro do piloto . Esse ataque foi  quase como um presságio. Um primeiro erro a anunciar os próximos  erros. O carro pega fogo depois de muitos tiros. Um rapaz que estava de bicicleta passando foi em auxílio dos ocupantes do carro e se defronta com a cena terrível em que  as moças estão fisicamente  dilaceradas e, a partir de então, perde a voz.

      Henry, um adolescente que não consegue mais falar após presenciar o violento ataque do avião ao carro, também não consegue mais estar a céu aberto pois relembra o aparecimento do fatídico aeroplano. Mãe de Henry , então resolve mandá-lo a casa da irmã em Copenghage onde os prédios são mais altos e mais numerosos e  poucos são os espaços abertos. 

       Henry tem como amiga a prima ,Rigmor que facilmente interage com ele e o ajuda a ir à escola junto com sua amiga Eva. Eva é uma menina que também presenciou a execução de um jovem na rua, à sua frente. Eva e Henry tem afinidade, ambos conhecem a vulnerabilidade do ser , pela violência que presenciaram. Eva é assustada com a violência humana.

       Rigmor é uma menina simpática e engraçada e Henry ,menino triste, sente-se alegre junto à  ela e participa ativamente  de suas brincadeiras  mesmo quando essas são a respeito de seu mutismo.

        O colégio que frequentam é católico e gerenciado por freiras. Dentre elas Teresa é uma professora  jovem que se fustiga. Hábito que não é mais usual nesses anos. Teresa clama a Deus nessa prática, como a pedir que Ele se faça presente e impeça toda violência , inclusive a que impõe a si mesma. Esse tempo de guerra e opressão  Teresa é como as crianças muito sensível a tanta dor , maldade e fúria.  Teresa encontra- se na rua com Fredrick  rapaz dinamarquês que colabora com Gestapo. Desilusão para família. É um rapaz revoltado e orgulhoso com sua participação no poder do país.  

        Os dois jovens se encontram e se atraem mutuamente . Teresa o chama de demônio e o beija.  Fredrick acostumado a violência e crítica se surpreende. Teresa é sedutora e ele não a esquece e vai procurá-la pedindo que lhe ensine  a rezar . Teresa o acolhe entre beijos e abraços e o dispensa com a desculpa de Deus os vê e que se faz presente , sangrando .  Teresa o envolve numa trama onde o sagrado e o sensorial estão emaranhados num mesmo ato.  

        Frederik  entende que escolheu um caminho árido, frio e desumano . Sai da Gestapo para sua própria felicidade e de sua família . Teresa é amor. 

        Teresa é professora de Rigmor, Eva e Henry e justifica para as crianças o mal no mundo como desatenções de Deus, melhor, distrações de Deus. Pois pra ela mesmo é difícil entender porque Deus permite as maldades dos homens. 

        A Dinamarca está sob o domínio dos alemães que ocupam um prédio no centro de Copenhagen. Lá, aprisionam e torturam os dinamarqueses que lutam para a libertação do país . 

        A  pedido dos dinamarqueses os aliados planejam um modo de ataque  à esse prédio onde instalaram o centro de operações da Gestapo , mesmo com o risco de matar os prisioneiros da Resistência que lá estão. Difícil operação pelo o fato do prédio encontrar- se no centro da cidade com muitos prédios e Torres  de alta tensão próximos.  Se dividiram em vários grupos de aeroplanos que atacariam por diversos lados, o prédio . Um dos aviões no meio do labirinto de ruas estreitas perde parte da cauda do avião e acaba por cair alvejando sem querer a escola cristã de Rigmor, Henry e Eva. Os outros aviões da Royal Air Force vendo a coluna de fumaça que se formou com a queda acaba por erroneamente bombardear o mesmo prédio. Os outros grupos, porém,  conseguiram  alvejar a Gestapo . 

        Teresa que havia junto com outras freiras levado as crianças para a cave a fim de protegê-las não consegue evitar o afogamento de Rigmor e e a morte de outras crianças . Foram 86 crianças. De forma que, assim  que vê Frederick, culpa ainda maior por sobreviver  lhe assombra e  joga-se para o fundo das águas invasoras.

        Henry e Eva salvaram-se pois estavam não embaixo, mas no térreo, na igreja. Saíram da sala de aula pouco antes do início do bombardeio. Como se estivessem protegidos pela dor que já carregavam.  Eva volta pra casa pra tomar a sopa que antes não havia conseguido ingerir e Henry volta a falar em prol da  vida das crianças sobreviventes.

      The film is based on a real event, a bombing raid on a Danish school during the Second World War.

      The film opens with an air raid on a hire car carrying three girls, due to a pilot error. This attack was almost like an omen. The first mistake heralds the mistakes to come. The car catches fire after many shots. A boy on a bicycle came to the aid of the occupants of the car and was confronted with the terrible scene in which the girls were physically torn apart and, from then on, lost their voices.

      Henry, a teenager who can no longer speak after witnessing the plane's violent attack on the car, is also unable to be in the open air as he recalls the appearance of the fateful aeroplane. Henry's mother decides to send him to her sister's house in Copenghage, where the buildings are taller and more numerous and there are few open spaces. 

       Henry has his cousin Rigmor as a friend, who easily interacts with him and helps him to go to school with his friend Eva. Eva is a girl who also witnessed the execution of a young man in the street in front of her. Eva and Henry have an affinity, they both know the vulnerability of being, because of the violence they have witnessed. Eva is frightened by human violence.

       Rigmor is a nice, funny girl and Henry, a sad boy, feels happy around her and actively participates in her jokes, even when they are about his muteness.

        The school they attend is Catholic and run by nuns. Amongst them, Teresa is a young teacher who fights back. A habit that is no longer common in these years. Teresa cries out to God in this practice, as if to ask him to be present and to prevent all violence, including that which she imposes on herself. In this time of war and oppression, Teresa is, like children, very sensitive to so much pain, evil and fury.  Teresa finds herself in the street with Fredrick, a Danish boy who collaborates with the Gestapo. A disappointment for the family. He's a disgusted young man, proud of his part in the country's power.  

        The two young people meet and attract each other. Teresa calls him a devil and kisses him.  Fredrick, used to violence and criticism, is surprised. Teresa is seductive and he doesn't forget her and goes to find her, asking her to teach him how to pray. Teresa welcomes him with kisses and hugs and dismisses him with the excuse that God sees them and is present, bleeding.  Teresa involves him in a plot where the sacred and the sensory are entangled in the same act.  

        Frederik realises that he has chosen an arid, cold and inhuman path. He leaves the Gestapo for his own happiness and that of his family. Teresa is love. 

        Teresa is Rigmor, Eva and Henry's teacher and justifies the evil in the world to the children as God's inattentions, or rather, God's distractions. She herself finds it difficult to understand why God allows human evil. 

        Denmark is under the domination of the Germans who occupy a building in the centre of Copenhagen. There, they imprison and torture the Danes who are fighting to liberate their country. 

        At the request of the Danes, the Allies plan a way to attack this building where they have set up the Gestapo operations centre, even at the risk of killing the Resistance prisoners inside. The operation is difficult because the building is in the centre of the city, with many buildings and high-voltage towers nearby.  They split up into several groups of aeroplanes that would attack the building from different sides. One of the planes, in the middle of the maze of narrow streets, lost part of its tail and ended up crashing, accidentally hitting the Christian school of Rigmor, Henry and Eva. The other Royal Air Force planes, seeing the column of smoke formed by the crash, mistakenly bombed the same building. The other groups, however, managed to target the Gestapo. 

        Teresa, who together with other nuns had taken the children to the cellar to protect them, was unable to prevent Rigmor from drowning and other children from dying. There were 86 children. As soon as she saw Frederick, she felt even more guilty about surviving and threw herself into the invading waters.

        Henry and Eva were saved because they were not downstairs, but on the ground floor, in the church. They left the classroom just before the bombing began. As if they were protected by the pain they were already carrying.  Eva returned home to drink the soup she hadn't been able to eat before and Henry spoke out again in favour of the lives of the surviving children.
