       Esse filme é uma adaptação do livro de Emma Donoghue denominado The Wonder . Nos conta a história passada em 1862 de uma jovem adolescente  que mora em uma aldeia na Irlanda e é considerada pela mídia uma pessoa de dons  extraordinários.  Ela não come. No início do filme esse fato já ocorre há 4 meses.

        Uma banca eclética formada por médicos, eclesiásticos e políticos resolve contratar uma enfermeira, além de uma madre católica, para se revezando, observar 24 horas por dia , a menina Annie. 

         O filme inicia com a chegada da sra. White, a enfermeira. Ela é muito profissional e cumpre com determinação a tarefa que lhe foi atribuída, descobrir se a menina Annie come escondido. Como pessoa da ciência faz todos dias exame físico em Annie, anotando tudo em seu caderno. Muito organizada .

        A senhora Wright tem família e é muito séria . Carrega uma tristeza na alma.  Se diz viúva e sem filhos, ficou casada pouco tempo. Traz um mistério em seu passado.  À noite tem um ritual de abrir um embrulho com dois sapatinhos de tricot de bebê . Junto tem uma bebida que toma às noites e uma agulha grande que se espeta no dedo até sair sangue e finaliza seu ritual tomando esse sangue. Parece um ritual que a faz recordar de momentos com um bebê e que culmina com torpor e dor.

        Annie ,além de não comer , tem também seu ritual de devoção a Cruz de Jesus e seu Sangue Sagrado e fica a maior parte do dia fechada em seu quarto no segundo andar da casa.  

         Os pais de Annie são pessoas pobres que vivem nessa casa emprestada por um cidadão depois do “milagre” do jejum  de Annie. Eles tinham um filho mais velho que eles dizem que foi  embora , mas que realmente está morto.

         A enfermeira acaba por descobrir uma mecha de cabelo que atribui ao irmão morto de Annie que estava escondido dentro de outro objeto que parecia a figura de um anjo, no quarto da menina.

         O relacionamento entre Elizabeth ou Lib  ,a enfermeira. e Annie vai se aprofundando e Lib vai se vinculando a ela cada vez mais. Na ânsia de descobrir logo o mistério de Annie , Lib impede que os pais cheguem perto dela achando  que esses a alimentam de algum modo é que com isso continuam a impedir que ela coma ,de fato.

         Com a piora da saúde da menina, a partir do afastamento dos pais Lib percebe que durante o beijo de boa noite ou de bom dia , a mãe de Annie passava comida já mastigada para ela e assim ela havia sobrevivido por aqueles  4 meses, sem comer. 

        Mas essa determinação dela na verdade acelera perda de saúde da menina que agora vai rapidamente se deteriorando. Angustiada, a enfermeira  pede pra que a mãe volte a dar os beijos de boa noite mas já não há mais como retornar . Era o segredo entre elas que agora todos sabem  , até o pai.  Lib de desespera acaba  por abreviar o tempo de vida da menina. Tenta , então, colocar por uma sonda com comida no estômago de Annie. Vê a violência do ato e desiste. Então , procura a banca que a contratou e relata esse fato. A banca, então, pede a  confirmação da freira que hesita mas acaba por negar. Na verdade ali Lib descobre que a ninguém interessa saber como Annie se alimenta apenas querem a confirmação de que ela não come, mesmo que isso acabe por levá-la á morte. A cidade, aldeia perdida na Irlanda , o médico , o padre e todos até o pai se beneficia desse jejum da menina. De vila desconhecida torna-se centro de curiosidade do mundo.

        A enfermeira mora numa pensão  onde também se encontra um rapaz jornalista interessando em escrever a história da menina que não come. Descobre Liz, através da mãe da menina , que este era seu amigo de infância que foi morar em outra cidade e por isso se afastaram .Ainda  conta que a saída dele deixando os pais sozinhos ocasionou, devido a onda de fome da época,  a morte deles. Se a mãe conta essa história com objetivo de afastar Lib do jornalista, o tiro sai pela culatra, pois a partir disso , sabendo que ele tb carrega uma culpa , talvez tão grande quanto a que ela tem em si, sente-se atraída por ele.

        A enfermeira não desiste de salvar a menina da fome que ela se impõe. E , consegue conquistando a  confiança dela saber o motivo de toda essa pena. Fica sabendo que Annie e o irmão eram muito unidos e que se gostavam muito e acabaram por se tornar amantes e até se casaram numa noite. Irmã - Esposa como ela diz. Conta que no dia seguinte seu irmão começa a ficar muito doente até que morre depois de algum tempo. Annie diz que sua mãe a culpou de tudo. E então, dessa forma, ela expurga a culpa de seu irmão estar no inferno, aonde, como ela crê,  não se tem como sair, a não ser por um sacrifício muito grande. Ela está dando a vida dela em troca da liberdade da alma de seu irmão.

        Lib, junto ao jornalista, agora seu amante , faz um plano pra tirar Annie desse lugar onde todos a querem morta. Mesmo que este não queira ficar com elas. Ele tem medo mas a culpa do abandono de seus pais o move a ajudá-la. Annie quer viver apesar de tudo e escolhe um nome pra si , sugerido por Liz. Num domingo hora que todos saem pra missa ,Lib combina com William que pega a menina num determinado local,  combinado.

       Lib incendeia a casa junto com seus objetos de rito,  assim também ela  se liberta da morte de seu filho,  dando-se outra chance de ser mãe. A freira, que acompanhava a menina vê o jornalista levando Annie a cavalo e pede que a Lib a promessa de cuidar bem de Annie. As duas mulheres que dela  cuidavam , a salvam.  Aliás todos se salvam, salvando Annie. Os pais que  alguma forma podem agora se libertar do amor proibido dos irmãos. A cidade que mantém o mistério do sumiço de Annie e Lib tem nova chance de formar uma família, na Austrália.

       This film is an adaptation of Emma Donoghue's book The Wonder . It tells the story set in 1862 of a teenage girl who lives in a village in Ireland and is considered by the media to have extraordinary gifts.  She doesn't eat. At the start of the film, this has been the case for four months.

        An eclectic group of doctors, ecclesiastics and politicians decide to hire a nurse, as well as a Catholic mother, to take turns looking after Annie 24 hours a day. 

         The film opens with the arrival of Mrs White, the nurse. She is very professional and resolutely fulfils the task she has been given: to find out if Miss Annie is eating in secret. As a scientist, she carries out physical examinations on Annie every day, writing everything down in her notebook. Very organised. 

         Mrs Wright has a family and is very serious. She carries a sadness in her soul.  She says she's a widow with no children and was only married a short time. She carries a mystery in her past.  At night she has a ritual of opening a parcel containing two little knitted baby shoes. It comes with a drink that she drinks every night and a large needle that she sticks in her finger until blood comes out and she finishes her ritual by drinking this blood. It seems to be a ritual that reminds her of moments with a baby and culminates in numbness and pain.

        Annie, as well as not eating, also has a ritual of devotion to the Cross of Jesus and his Holy Blood, and she is locked in her room on the second floor of the house most of the day.  

         Annie's parents are poor people who live in the house lent to them by a citizen after the "miracle" of Annie's fast. They had an older son who they say is gone, but who is really dead.

         The nurse ends up discovering a lock of hair that she attributes to Annie's dead brother that was hidden inside another object that looked like the figure of an angel, in the girl's room.

         The relationship between Elizabeth or Lib, the nurse, and Annie deepens and Lib becomes more and more attached to her. In her eagerness to discover Annie's mystery quickly, Lib prevents her parents from getting close to her, thinking that they are feeding her in some way and that they are preventing her from eating.

         As the girl's health worsens, Lib realises that when she kisses her goodnight or good morning, Annie's mother passes her chewed food, so that she has survived those four months without eating. 

        But her determination actually accelerated the girl's loss of health, which was now rapidly deteriorating. Anguished, the nurse asked her mother to kiss her goodnight again, but there was no way back. It was the secret between them that now everyone knows, even her father.  Out of desperation, Lib ends up shortening the girl's lifespan. He then tries to put food through a tube into Annie's stomach. He sees the violence of the act and gives up. She then goes to the bank that hired her and tells them about it. The bank then asks for confirmation from the nun, who hesitates but eventually denies it. In fact, there Lib discovers that no one is interested in knowing how Annie eats, they just want confirmation that she doesn't eat, even if it leads to her death. The town, a village lost in Ireland, the doctor, the priest and even her father all benefit from the girl's fast. From an unknown village, she becomes a centre of curiosity for the world.

        The nurse lives in a boarding house where there is also a young journalist interested in writing the story of the girl who won't eat. Liz discovers, through the girl's mother, that the boy was her childhood friend who went to live in another city and that's why they drifted apart, and that his departure, leaving his parents alone, led to their deaths due to the famine of the time. If the mother tells this story with the aim of distancing Lib from the journalist, it backfires because, knowing that he also carries a guilt, perhaps as great as the one she has in herself, she feels attracted to him.

        The nurse doesn't give up trying to save the girl from the hunger she's imposed on herself. And, by winning her trust, he manages to find out the reason for all this pity. She learns that Annie and her brother were very close and that they loved each other very much and ended up becoming lovers and even got married one night. Sister - Wife as she says. She tells us that the next day her brother started to get very ill until he died after a while. Annie says that her mum blamed her for everything. And so, in this way, she expunges the guilt of her brother being in hell, where, as she believes, there is no way out except by a very great sacrifice. She is giving her life in exchange for the freedom of her brother's soul.

        Lib, together with the journalist who is now her lover, hatches a plan to get Annie out of this place where everyone wants her dead. Even if they don't
